Workshop Description:
In this highly interactive and engaging workshop, participants will explore the concept of assertiveness and its crucial role in the interpreting profession. The workshop will focus on recognizing when and how to say "no" in professional settings to protect both the interpreter and the consumers. Attendees will differentiate between assertive, aggressive, passive, and passive-aggressive behaviors and learn how these communication styles can impact interpreting assignments. Through a combination of direct instruction, Q&A, and role-playing activities, participants will develop practical strategies for assertively managing boundaries and making ethical decisions during assignments.
Educational Objectives:
Participants will be able to define and differentiate between aggressive, passive, assertive, and passive-aggressive behaviors in professional settings.
Participants will identify at least three assertive techniques for saying "no" in an interpreting context.
Participants will list two potential risks and two benefits of saying "no" during an interpreting assignment.
Presenter Bio:
Anne Freeman attended Shenandoah College in Winchester, VA, graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation. She then worked in different facilities with people with a variety of disabilities. Anne later graduated from the ITP at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts and now lives and works in Boston as a free lance interpreter. She is married with one child who is a senior in college. Anne enjoys cooking, making quilts and scrapbooks.
