Workshop Description:
When it comes to working as an independent contractor or ‘freelance’ interpreter, there are various skills that go beyond just knowing two languages. This workshop was inspired by years of frustration, trial and error, and conversations with colleagues. Together, we will explore efficient and ethical business practices used by interpreters. Topics include marketing and social media presence, working with agencies, necessary invoicing elements for billing, and a brief discussion on tax information. We'll also cover organizational systems, contract negotiation, and touch on retirement and insurance options. This workshop is designed to be a free flow of ideas and an information-sharing session among colleagues.
Educational Objectives:
Participants will identify and apply six organizational tips for managing work as a self-employed freelance interpreter.
After discussing contract negotiation, participants will label the basic elements of an invoice and understand key terms in contracts.
Participants will demonstrate a basic understanding of tax requirements specific to freelance interpreting by identifying key tax forms and deadlines.
Participants will name at least three types of insurance necessary for freelance interpreters and explain two basic retirement plan options.
Participants will describe and implement three effective marketing strategies to enhance their professional presence as interpreters.
